Fruitful turnover development and strong export ratio

Today, 14 June 2019, the A. Darbo AG, Austria's leading jam and honey supplier, presented its figures for the 2018 financial year at its annual general meeting. With a turnover of €140.3 million, the Tyrolean family firm achieved a 1.6 percent increase in turnover last year. The popularity of Darbo products abroad is also growing steadily: the already high export ratio in previous years continued to rise to 52.8 percent. In Austria, Darbo maintained its position as market leader in the jam and fruit spread segment, holding strong at 58.3 percent.

"Our products continue to enjoy great popularity abroad: export markets such as Italy, Russia, North America and China have developed steadily. Meanwhile, we recorded particularly strong increases in Germany and the Netherlands. We were also able to further expand the high level in Germany in food retailing and HoReCa by focusing on special products such as confectionery jams for bakeries in addition to other product highlights such as the new sugar-reduced fruit spreads, which are becoming increasingly popular," reports Martin Darbo, Director of A. Darbo AG, in regards to the successful 2018 financial year.

Darbo's export ratio, which continued to grow, was an impressive 52.8 percent in 2018 (2017: 52.2 percent). In Darbo's most important export market, Germany, its market share for jams and fruit spreads increased to 5 percent (2017: 4.7 percent). In the Netherlands, sales more than doubled, with promising new products from leading retail chains and excellent turnover of speciality jams for large bakeries.

Stable role in the Austrian market

Market shares in Austria are highly stable: At a share of 58.3 percent, Darbo remains the clear market leader for jams and fruit spreads in Austria. Darbo also defended its position as the Austrian market leader in the honey sector with 31.1 percent. In syrups, Darbo remains number 2 with 15 percent market share (source: Nielsen Austria, by value; classic food retail without hard discount).

378 employees (2017: 375) work at Darbo's three sites in Tyrol and supply retail chains, hotels, large bakeries, dairies, cruise lines and airlines in 60 countries.

Investments in storage capacity and photovoltaics

“The sun has been helping to cook jam for a few months now,” says Martin Darbo in reference to a new photovoltaic system at the company building that generates part of company’s electricity demands in a climate-neutral way. The company also invested in a new high-bay warehouse for finished products at the Dornau factory, thus increasing its capacity to over 14,000 pallet spaces. According to a spokesman, the Stans-based company “is well-equipped to meet the challenges of the future.”

"Even if we are optimistic about the future, the procurement of raw materials of the right quality remains an enormous challenge. We’re certainly unwilling to deviate one millimetre from our strict selection criteria and high standards, because we know no compromises when it comes to quality and taste," says Martin Darbo with firm resolve.
