12.6.2017

Almost EUR 15 million invested and export ratio up

A. Darbo AG, Austria’s leading jam and honey provider, presented the figures for the 2016 financial year at the Annual General Meeting on 9 June 2017. The overall picture is extremely positive, with the Tyrolean family firm achieving a turnover of €133 million, up 4.2 per cent. The export share – particularly to Germany, Italy and the USA – also increased to 50.8 per cent. In Austria, Darbo continues to establish itself as the clear market leader in the jam and fruit spread sector, with the market share increasing to 61.3 per cent.

With a turnover increase of 4.2 per cent, Martin Darbo, Managing Director of A. Darbo AG, feels positive about the 2016 financial year. “We have clearly achieved our turnover goals for 2016,” says a delighted Darbo: “Turnover has increased for all of our product sectors: from retail and catering products through to special products destined for processing.”

The market share for jams and fruit spreads in Austria, which was already high, increased slightly again in 2016 to 61.3 per cent. Darbo remains the Austrian market leader for honey too, despite a minor decline in market share to 33.7 per cent. Darbo achieved a 15.5 per cent market share for syrups (source: Nielsen Austria, various product groups/total food retail figures excluding Hofer and Lidl).

Export successes: Darbo supplies 60 countries worldwide
Darbo’s continuously increasing export ratio, which currently stands at an impressive 50.8 per cent (2015: 50.1 per cent), plays a key part in the firm’s success. The family firm, with its headquarters in Tyrol, supplied 60 countries in the preceding financial year. Darbo achieved high increases in the most important export market of Germany (+4.17 per cent), where the Tyroleans now account for 4.2 per cent by value of the jam market as regards traditional food retailers (source: Nielsen, total food retail figures excluding Aldi, Lidl and Norma; 2016), as well as in the USA (+16 per cent) and in Italy (+5.9 per cent). 2016 even saw a sharp increase (+10.2 per cent) in Russia, where sales have been down over the last few years due to the persistently weak rouble.

2016: highest investment amount in recent years

The portion jars, which are used by countless hotels and airlines, are among the most popular Darbo products worldwide and are in growing demand. In order to meet this and to further expand the production area, Darbo invested a total of some EUR 15 million in the Stans site and the Dornau factory in 2016, as well as in expanding the cooling capacity – the highest investment amount in recent years. The new part of the plant has been fully operational since January 2017.

The number of employees also increased from 330 in the previous year to 349, making the Tyrolean family firm one of the most important employers in the region.

The most important mission is preserving quality

“In 2017, our greatest challenge and most important mission remains preserving product quality. Procuring high-quality raw materials is not getting any easier but we will never give up. Because we will not accept any compromises when it comes to the taste of our products. Furthermore, 2017 will see us continue to try and grow in existing export markets and increase our high market share in Austria,” says Darbo.
